Langhirano and the Parma ham museum

In the Parma valley, where the breeze off the Apennines dries the hams, an old cattle market now tells their story. Langhirano is the capital of Prosciutto di Parma, and its museum is the one door you can simply walk through.

Langhirano lies in the Parma river valley about 20 km south of the city, and most ham makers are in the hills around it. It is a small, lively town with a clock tower on its main square, a ham museum and, every September, a festival devoted to Prosciutto di Parma.

Below: where Langhirano is, the museum's hours, prices and rooms, how to visit a ham maker, the festival, getting there from Parma, Torrechiara castle nearby, and a plan for the day.

The quick answer

The Museo del Prosciutto di Parma is at Via Bocchialini 7 in Langhirano, about 20 km south of Parma. It opens on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, 10:00 to 18:00, from 1 March to 8 December; tickets cost EUR 5 (EUR 4 reduced, EUR 3 ages 6 to 18), and a ham tasting is EUR 3 more. Drive the SS665 in about 30 minutes, or take the TEP bus from Parma.

Where is Langhirano?

In the Parma river valley, about 20 km south of Parma, at the heart of the area where Prosciutto di Parma may be made.

By law the ham is cured only in the hills of the province of Parma, at least 5 km south of the Via Emilia and up to 900 metres. The makers cluster around Langhirano, where the valley channels the dry air of the Apennines. Around the town you see long buildings with rows of tall, narrow windows: many of them are curing halls.

What are the museum's opening hours and ticket prices?

Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, 10:00 to 18:00, from 1 March to 8 December. Tickets cost EUR 5, with a ham tasting for EUR 3 more.

What is inside the Parma ham museum?

Rooms on the history, traditions, technology, culture and gastronomy of Prosciutto di Parma and the area's cured meats, with audio guides, in the former Foro Boario, the town's cattle market.

The brick arcades of the old market now frame the story of the ham, from the pigs and the salt to the tools of the curing halls. End with the tasting: for EUR 3 more, you taste what you have just read about.

Can you visit a ham maker in Langhirano?

Only with a tour or a booking: the makers are working factories. The exception is the September festival, when some open their doors.

The easiest way in is a tour from Parma: the ham maker tour ($99, 2h 30m) goes to a working maker with a van from the station, and the cheese and ham tours add a dairy. Prices, what you see and what to wear are in the factory tour guide.

When is the Festival del Prosciutto di Parma?

Every September in Langhirano. In 2026 it ran from 4 to 6 September, and ham makers opened their doors for Finestre Aperte from 5 to 20 September.

The festival fills the town with stalls, tastings and events, and Finestre Aperte, open windows, is the one time of year when you can visit some makers without a tour. Dates for 2027 will be announced by the organisers; plan a September trip around them if you can.

How do you get to Langhirano from Parma?

By car on the SS665 Massese, about 20 km and 30 minutes; by TEP bus 2670 via Torrechiara, with few runs on Sundays; or on a tour with pickup in Parma.

  • By car: the SS665 runs south up the Parma valley; it is the easiest choice at weekends, when the museum is open.
  • By bus: TEP line 2670 links Parma, Torrechiara and Langhirano; check the timetable, especially on Sundays.
  • By train: there is no station; the nearest is Parma.
  • On a tour: most ham tours pick up near Parma station, though they visit a maker rather than the museum.

No car? The Parmigiano and Parma ham tour picks up in Parma and drives you into the ham hills, rated 4.9.

Is Torrechiara castle worth adding?

Yes. The castle, built from 1448 to 1460 by Pier Maria Rossi, stands on a hill in Langhirano's territory, a few kilometres towards Parma, with frescoed rooms and wide views. Tickets cost EUR 8; it is closed on Mondays, and booking is compulsory on Sundays and holidays.

At weekends it opens from 11:00 to 17:00, so it fits after a morning at the museum. Rooms, tickets, legends and the walk up are covered in depth on our sister site, torrechiara.parma.it.
